Description

Colonoscopy is a procedure that uses an endoscope to look directly into the bowel to diagnose conditions or lesions such as abnormal cells, ulcers, or polyps. If your doctor finds a lesion in the colon, he or she may use the tweezers on the endoscope to remove a tissue sample for analysis or even perform a polypectomy. Early detection and removal of dangerous polyps can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. For enquiries or booking of gastroscopy, please contact re:HEALTH.

Colonoscopy for Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Hong Kong. It is treatable if detected early. Screening for colorectal cancer means screening and diagnosis before symptoms become apparent. It also helps to identify people with high risk. Colorectal cancer screening is commonly seen as an important step before diagnosis, thus is considered an effective preventative health care if you can identify the potential risk of colorectal cancer before it appears.

Common symptoms of colorectal cancer

  • Colorectal cancer may not have any symptoms in the early stages, common symptoms are:

  • Unexplained changes in bowel habits (diarrhoea or constipation) that last for more than two weeks;

  • Blood or large amounts of mucus in the stool;

  • Continued urge to defecate after a bowel movement;

  • Abdominal discomfort (persistent pain, bloating, fullness or cramps);

  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

High-risk Individuals

High risk factors for the disease includes age, family history, and suffering from ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In addition, lack of physical activity, a diet high in fat and low in fibre, alcohol and tobacco consumption, and obesity all increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Be aware of the changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhoea), blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and abdominal discomfort to detect signs of colorectal cancer.

According to the Department of Health, the chance of developing colorectal cancer with hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer gene reaches 50-80%, and the risk of developing colorectal cancer with familial polyposis gene reaches 70-100%. So never treat it lightly.

照腸鏡 FAQ

FAQ

 What happens during a colonoscopy? How long does a colonoscopy take?

 Colonoscopy uses a soft, flexible, bendable endoscope of approximately 1.3 cm diameter to pass through the anus for colon lining examination. The doctor will observe the colonic condition in a monitor and at the same time perform procedures, such as haemostasis, polyp removal, haemorrhoids ligation, injection, while tissues can be extracted for laboratory tests during the process which can be completed in about half to an hour.

 What are the points to note?

 Patients should eat a low-residue diet and avoid foods such as fruits and vegetables, cereals and milk 2 to 3 days prior to the colonoscopy. Take heed of your doctor's instructions to take laxatives and only consume liquidised food such as thin porridge or gravy on the day of the test and do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to the examination.

 Is it painful to take a colonoscopy?

 It is normal to have a feeling of abdominal swelling during the procedure.

 Is there anything in particular I should prepare for?

 You need to be fasted for eight hours before your blood glucose test, i.e., no food intake in the morning before your examination. Only small portion of water intake is allowed. It is best for women to avoid the check-up during menstruation.
