Description

A gastroscopy is a procedure where a flexible tube called an endoscope is used to look inside the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It allows the doctor to observe the gastric condition and pathological changes of the upper digestive tract, such as abnormal cells, ulceration or polyps, on a monitor.

When do I need a gastroscopy?

Since people with stomach cancer producing no noticeable symptoms in its early stages, by the time symptoms are recognised, the cancer has often reached an advanced stage and may have spread to other parts of the body, which makes the illness even harder to treat. There are several reasons attributed to the cause of stomach cancer, including age, consumption of high-salt and smoked foods, lack of fruits and vegetables intake, family history of stomach cancer, past infection of helicobacter pylori, chronic stomach inflammation, pernicious anaemia, smoking and stomach polyps etc.

The endoscope has a light and a camera at one end for the doctor to inspect the inside lining of your digestive tract and treat any polyps, ulcers or certain other problems. All patients will have tissue painlessly extracted for a rapid H. pylori test, and if needed, the doctor can use special tools in extracting pathological tissue through the endoscope. When the procedure is over, the doctor will gently and promptly remove the endoscope. For enquiries on the cost of gastroscopy, please contact re:HEALTH.

High-risk Individuals for Gastric Disease

Stomach cancer are more likely to develop in people with poor diet, chronic deficiency of fruits and vegetables, habits of smoking and drinking alcohol and whose diets include processed, preserved or smoked foods, such as sausage, bacon and salted fish, which are foods with high nitrate content. In addition, Helicobacter Pylori is also considered to be one of the causes of gastric cancer.

Gastroscopy Procedure

Gastroscopy often takes about 15-30 minutes. Before the procedure, patients can choose to be under monitored anaesthesia or sedation. Anaesthetics will be sprayed in your throat before the endoscope in inserted down your throat and into your oesophagus. The patient may have a mild sore throat, nausea and swelling of the upper abdomen after the procedure.

Gastroscopy can help diagnose diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as gastric cancer/inflammation, oesophageal cancer/inflammation, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcers, and gastric polyps with greater accuracy and effectiveness than gastric X-ray and abdominal sonography.

Precautions before and after gastroscopy

No food or drink six hours prior to the procedure.
