FAQ

Why is it crucial to have regular medical check-ups? How often should I have a health screening?

It is recommended that adults aged 18 or above should undergo a regular health screening every year to detect potential health disorders or hidden illnesses. High risk groups and elderly should have their physical examinations every six months as it can be difficult to diagnose diseases in the early stages. Behavioural risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of sleep and exercise are also attributed to poor health, a comprehensive health screening can be conducted to acquire a full understanding of your physical condition. Individuals who have family history with serious illnesses like cancer or heart disease, should undergo appropriate health checks according to their needs.

What should middle-aged women pay attention to when choosing for a health check?

Regular gynaecological check-ups are available from the age of 20. For those who had sexual experience should undergo cervical screening (Pap smear and HPV) to detect abnormalities on cervical tissues. Some gynaecological diseases may have initial symptoms that are not obvious, such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cyst or fibroid tumor, and STDs, regular check-ups can help prevent relevant diseases and manage the health of cervical cells. It is recommended for women aged 30 or above to have a breast sonography to check for breast cysts and tumors, as well as the structure of each layer of the mammary gland, the shape and texture of the masses. In addition, pelvic sonography can be used to detect uterus and ovaries abnormalities, such as cysts, uterine fibroids and endometrioma and so forth, which is conducive to early detection of cervical and ovarian cancer. Combined with tumor markers CA15-3 and CA 125, breast and ovarian cancer can be detected in an early stage, noting that the 5-year survival rate for stage I ovarian cancer can reach as high as 90%!

In addition to regular gynaecological check-ups and cervical smears, the doctor will recommend breast examinations, including mammography and sonography, depending on the risk of developing breast cancer. Bone densitometry is also recommended for older post-menopausal women or those who are underweight.

What are the common health concerns and screening items for men?

Common health concerns in men include heart disease, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Physical examinations for men generally include: routine blood test, test for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, hepatitis test, electrocardiogram, chest and abdominal X-ray, faecal occult blood test, tumor markers for pancreatic, nasopharyngeal and prostate cancer, sonography, thyroid function screening, etc. These tests could help to assess top health risks for men, in particular colon cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, coronary heart disease, liver cirrhosis. Consider STD screening, fertility hormone and sexual health screening such as HPV DNA, syphilis spirochetes, HIV antibodies and antigens and testosterone if required, for a better preparation for marriage and childbirth.

What are the symptoms of thyroid cancer?

Malignant lymphoma and malignant metastasis cancer are rare, 95% or above malignant thyroid tumors are primary thyroid carcer, among which 60% are papillary cancer, and it is most common in young women. While early signs may be mild and go unnoticed, the growing cancer tumor can cause tracheal and oesophageal compression that trigger symptoms like dyspnoea and dysphagia, and may result in the invasion of larynx nerve that contributes to voice hoarseness. At early stages of papillary thyroid cancer, the lump is usually found in a side of the thyroid gland. The lump can move up and down as the person swallows. Early-stage cancer is difficult to distinguish malignant tumors from benign tumors in the clinical setting, and metastatic cervical lymph node swelling ensues. The tumor may show signs of compression or distant metastases to bone, lung, brain and so on as it grows.
